Liberalism is another name for the neo-classic theory found in the economic field. Liberals believe the principles of Adam Smith. His theory was that if people are out of work, it is because they do not want to take a job, whatever the reason (low pay being one in many). His remedy involved removing the minimum salary. It may seem paradoxal, so I advise you to read the theory. It’s too long to explain here.
In other fields, this theory aimed to simply give three duties to the government: inner and outer protection (police and army) and justice – these duties originated from monarchies because they depended on the King.
On the other hand, we have Keynes. In the 1940′s, he published a book taking every theories the liberals had and simply disproved them. The most notable difference is that for Keynes, unemployment is unvolontary – employers will only keep the minimum number of people needed to make sure 100% of what the company makes is sold.
This means companies don’t hire because they don’t need to. Therefore Keyne’s remedy was to raise the paycheck so that employees could afford more stuff, effectively raising demand and pocket change.
Keyne’s theory, however, can easily be misunderstood. As far as I know, he did not care about free education or universal healthcare. These duties make a Welfare State, which can be broken down into two “foundations”; either you pay a monthly fee or your tax money is used to give the services (think about healthcare in the US under Obama)
What have we learned today? Liberals are, in fact, Conservatives. Democrats are more Keynesian [sic?], but also want a Welfare State.
I know the word “liberal” applies to many things, but it’s not the right use. Nowadays it has become a synonym of “that guy who doesn’t agree with me”, which is pretty strange. I hope next time you want to use that word you’ll think about it twice.
“Liberal” means advocating change. “Conservative” means advocating maintaining (or restoring) the status quo.
