  1. Nevery says:

    Oh look…magnets.

    • rofl@fails says:

Awesome. 175 thumbs up and 1 thumb down. I feel sad for the forever alone person who actually gave this a thumbs down.

    • failblogfail says:

F*cking magnets; how do they… oh, what’s the point?

      • Crook3d says:

Someone get in touch with the mormons and get them to explain how this thing works.. and how close I am to the hoverboard I have been dreaming about since back to the future 2

    • xiromisho says:

er… Magnets don’t allow for the adjustment of an object at the Z axis of the universe – only X and Y – it will pull or push, magnets don’t allow for the adjustment of say, 1 inch to 2 inches above the magnet, as they show in the movie.

      • Humm. says:

The way I understand it, those are, as they say in the video, superconductors, which create a very strong magnetic field. The piece that’s being levitated changes the magnetic field, but the field alters itself accordingly and can “memorize” the alteration of itself, which means that once the object is in place, it will stay there unless it’s moved. I’ve had a student of superconductivity explain it to me some time ago, but I might recall it incorrectly.

Anyway, the basic idea is about magnetic fields, which means that it’s very close to magnets.

        • simonedi says:

wrong way round, the superconductor does not create a strong field, that is provided by the permanent magnets on the ring and thing the person holds. The superconductor is effectively repelled and attracted to the magnets in equal amounts so levitates at a fixed distance

Other than that you are fairly close, the memorisation it not that good an analogy for explaining but the full explanation is more complex

  2. Jake Ryan says:

    Science boner!

  3. zupernam says:

Now figure out a way to do this without the liquid nitrogen, and make the earth more than 20% cooler!!

  4. jacob_awesome says:

why isn’t everyone at that freaking science center looking at this masterpiece!?!? is there a time-machine taking-up their time or the cure for cancer somewhere!?!? we’re going to have flying cars, soon, dammit!

    • N. Owen says:

Actually, the time machines takes up no time to visit, if you think about it.

    • Time travel doesn’t work. Why haven’t we seen anyone from the future yet? Are these ages just SOOO extremely boring, that those billion peoples in the future who have such machine, just didn’t care to visit?

      • Mosethyoth says:

        I suppose there’s a really simple solution:
Whoever will travel back in time will lose everything what he doesn’t bring with him because the present will be altered so his future will never exist anymore. So either no one dares to or everyone who does doesn’t want anyone who’s at his destination know of it.

        • Shady says:

Except, by definition, you cannot alter the past because it has already happened :) Anyone who travels back in time is traveling to a past that has already occured. They have already been there BEFORE they travel back (potentially before they were born) and every action they take has already occured. They cannot change anything in the past because everything they’ve done has already happened.

I personally don’t think time travel is possible for the same reason as Peter Van Dam (and I remember Steven Hawking saying the same thing): “Time travel might be possible. But, if it is, why are we not inundated by travelers from the future?”

      • Tralalalawl says:

Implying there are billions of people in the future, maybe they all died. =)

  5. kaptain_gonzo says:

I LOVE science. That is just too cool [bad pun].

  6. korock says:

    THAT’S SO F*CKING AWESOME!

  7. kake79 says:

    O_o My brain hurts…

  8. ISR says:

Am I the only one who watched this and said, “Oh yeah! One more step closer to my back to the future hover board!” in his head?

Anyway, yeah keep at it science!

  9. capt. nitro says:

Frictionless mag-lev train in the works yet? Well, I suppose it won’t be entirely frictionless, given that it’s surrounded by air…

  10. bEEarCUB says:

Wow, this is seriously cool. And to think I thought I had become bored of maglev tricks.

  11. Baccar Wozat says:

Magnets, how do they… yuck, even I can’t type something that ancient.

  12. echase says:

Chinese have ha one in commercial operation for 7 years now.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_Maglev_Train

    • TheAgentGray says:

Not exactly, this is quantum locking, not simple magnetic field manipulation. It’s different, and considerably more interesting while a maglev tracks function by changing the magnetic field to attract/repel an object, this works by holding an object steady in a magnetic field that remains constant. not sure if it’s practical or feasible for anything beyond this trick, but it is a considerably different technology.

    • zombie says:

lol, buyed from the germans, cause the germans got no balss or money do build something they invented…..

  13. Father Wolf says:

    SOOO cool!
This is in my hometown. While this was going on, we stopped at the Baltimore Convention Center for a potty break, not imagining what wonders lay within.

  14. remi says:

    Magneto striked again!

  15. trevor.clive says:

SOMEONE GAVE IT A THUMBS DOWN!?!
That must have been an accident.

  16. ugh says:

    How do magnets work?

  17. Dr.Sid says:

Fake .. I can tell by the smoke ..

    • Cyanide says:

The guy wasn’t using any gloves while he working with the liquid nitrogen.

      • Cyanide says:

I’m not saying this is fake but its kind of weird.

        • lilah says:

Not as weird as it seems. I work with liquid helium and liquid nitrogen a lot, and you can definitely touch something like that with your bare hands, as long as 1) your hands are dry and 2) you’re quick. You’ll notice he mainly just taps the thing, with no prolonged contact. And even if he held it for too long, he’d just get a minor cryoburn. I’ve gotten worse burns in my kitchen than I ever have in a cryolab.

      • Alpaca says:

It is okay to touch it as long as oyu don’t keep it in your hand. Touching it only for a few seconds at a time doesn’t burn your skin.

  18. Seve says:

    Z0mg UFO Technologyyyy

  19. Freaky Geek says:

It’s called “Meissner Effect”, and for those who are working with superconductors every day, it’s not really impressing, and it’s neither wizardry nor diffcult to achieve. Just get a good superconductor cooled down below its transition temperature, a magnetic field and you’re done.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meissner_effect

  20. Matt says:

Meanwhile, several dozen miles away, Palestinians are teaching that Mickey Mouse is a Zionist conspiracy, and are blowing themselves up at checkpoints that allowed other Palestinians to WORK in Israel.

A thousand Palestinians worth one Israeli, INDEED.

  21. Raines says:

What does the cooling have to do with experiment?

    • Kemp says:

I haven’t checked the particular technique here, but normal magnets don’t work that this :P

    • Quigley says:

This kind of effect is made possible by what scientists call “superconductivity”, which is basically a property, just like ferromagnetism. Although, the materials that we use to create “superconductors” have to be cooled so the effect “kicks in”. For example, such materials are considered “high-temperature superconductors” if the effect still takes place above 30 K (= – 243,15 °C, = – 405 °F).

  22. Hatman says:

Is it just me, or did it sound like Jeff Goldblum was behind the camera?

  23. Nagem says:

I can almost taste hovercrafts in the near future, but I will likely be in my 50s TT.TT Floating wheelchair…..:D

  24. Lukas N. says:

That’s sure awesome, but nothing really new. Saw that live like four years ago… So anyone hoping for flying cars with this technique: There is still a very very long way to go.

  25. Spidey Man says:

Does anyone else think the guy behind the camera sounds a lil like Jeff Goldblum?

  26. IndyShane says:

This is the Devil’s work. This sort of experimentation should be banned. No good Christian would ever try such folly. Praise be to God, not the lie of so called science.

    • Pooka says:

Do you have electric lights? Do you have a frig and freezer to keep your your food from spoiling? Do you drive a motorized vehicle?

I KNOW you use a computer! All these inventions come from the intellect of God’s greatest creation, mankind. God gave us an intellect and the ability to explore and understand science, which only gives us more appreciation of His handiwork. The more we learn about and develop science, the more we are awed by the Great Creator of the properties that allow these inventions.

God and science go hand-in-hand. Science is only a way of better understanding the magnificence and glory of His universe. I challenge you to check out how God and science come together in harmony, Google: astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross’ “Reasons to Believe” site.

  27. Bork says:

    THIS

    NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED

    IN EVERYTHING

  28. Livin' Legend says:

I sense an O’Reilly/Tsoukalos double team meme here.

  29. Seth Weisel says:

    that floating donut looks tasty

  30. Jessica says:

Since when did white fudge covered oreos start doing that?!

  31. Keenan says:

    I freaking want one!

  32. MisterDerperDerper says:

With this knowledge i will for-fill my lifetime dream…

  33. clock says:

The Weeping Angels are quantum locked

  34. UR mom says:

ummm u guys r missing the point. the only magnets are on the track not the part floating that is just a piece of metal. the real point is whatever is on top(probably liquid nitrogen or sumthing else),cooling the surrounding atoms (the magnetic field) and superconducting them so it locks in place. p.s. thats what i think dont reply saying how stupid i am i just cant remeber how it works off the top of my head. oh, and aliens probably fly spaceships using earth’sgnetic field, just sayin.

  35. jim says:

It used to all be done with velcro and mirrors… and now, it’s magnets and mirrors.

So the Israelis can achieve THIS, but peace with the Palestinians is too hard?

  36. paul says:

So THAT’S how David Blaine does it… hmmmm.

  37. LuisaC says:

    WAAAAAAAAAY cool! lol
