What? The Divine Comedy, opposing Christianity? That masterpiece of world literature, which is basically the literary embodiment of Catholic theology? Has this kid actually read those books? Or Animal Farm? The Qur’an? Canterbury Tales? Paradise Lost? Mark Twain? All these are basic books in any Catholic institution of learning! I don’t know what to make of this post. Is he just naive, or is this just a strange school? He should borrow them from any Catholic university. (Well, not pulp like Interview with a Vampire – the good books.)
Exactly… “His Dark Materials” is probably the only ‘objectionable’ one on the list, and that is more for the lack of literary quality than the rehashing of gnostic anti-Christian cosmology within.
But the rest, maybe it is one of these so-called Catholic schools that really has nothing to do with the Church but was set up by a private group trying to be more Catholic than the pope. Dante is regarded as a theologian for pete’s sake…
I’ve only read two of these books, and in a roundabout way they both can be considered “opposing”.
Sabriel is about necromancy. In the book, death is a place with…9?…gates. It doesn’t say what happens when you pass the last, but it says some things stick around (kinda like ghosts.) in between the others. As you might guess with necromancy, there is the raising and enslavement of the dead. Another problem is Charter magic, which is kinda…if you play video games with religion in it, you could describe it as holy magic. When a mage is born, at least this is what I gathered, they are “baptised” (that’s the word they used in the book) with a “Charter Mark” with is like a magical tattoo on their forehead. The description of the Charter was a force that connects everything. Not exactly Catholic friendly. I see why this might be banned, though it still makes me sad that people are so flimsy in their belief as to be threatened by this (I am Christian, I’ve no issue with any of it. If you have bad boundaries with reality you shouldn’t force your views on others.) Oh, there’s also Free Magic…which is apparently “corrupted” Charter Magic? It doesn’t go into a lot of detail. One is order, the other chaos maybe? That’s a popular theme I’ve found.
Animal Farm…lul. That is confusing. I guess maybe it’s the giving of human traits to animals?…and maybe the fact that it’s about communism, and most (attempted) communists are athiests?…That’s seems like a stretch…
But then most censorship doesn’t make sense at all…It’s like banning people from free will – and isn’t THAT anti-Christian? What’s the point of choosing good if it’s not a choice? If you don’t know any different?
*edit* Another suggestion on Free Magic – the Free Magic creatures are not dead, they were never really alive. They are evil, though. I’ve heard demons described the same way, along with poltergeists.
Oh, and the Free Magic creatures can be enslaved. So if they ARE the book’s idea of demons, then we add warlock to necromancer…and get a very “offensive” book.
we had to read books like 1984, Animal Farm and some Canterbury Tales FOR school here. Almost got Hitchhiker’s on the list, too, but it was too long.
Other classes included Paradise Lost, Dorian Grey, Lord of the Flies, Metamorphosis and of course Grimm’s Fairy tales in german.
Dunno how close-minded school like that can exist… even in religion classes we had heavy debates on religious critics, religious sarcasm and history vs. belief. But I come from a country where “theologist” means “scientific religious researcher” and not “stern believer”, so meh..
Anyway, this girl is awesome and an enrichment to her fellow student’s education.
I went to a catholic school that banned Harry Potter and a few other things, but it was mostly for show. The school i went to seemed more concerned with making itself look good than actually educating kids and teaching them to be good people. Seriously, if a kid’s parents were influential in the community, that kid could get away with murder. Also, when the weird or special ed kids were bullied, the principal allowed it because she KNEW that the parents would pull the kids out. Then there would be more of the “right” kind of people. SHE ACTUALLY ADMITTED THIS TO MY FRIEND’S MOM.
I have a sneaking suspicion this is bull. My roommate from college and my cousin both went to Catholic schools and both had Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies as *required* reading. Maybe someone just watched that episode of south park…
wow that’s a smart girl (i think it’s a girl…)! nobody in my hs would have done that. well none of those books were banned at my hs, but still. I hate how some high schools like to control the kids by telling the what to read. That’s what I love about college, none of my professors are like that.
Many Catholic Schools are this insane if not more so. Total applause. Now I feel like I wuss for running a black market soda can dispensary from my locker. When 12-packs were 2.99, and in-school soda machines were $1/can(doubled from the previous year), I had to do something.
That is awesome. And i’m glad i live in a forward thinking Catholic community. In my school, the remedial English classes had to read Harry Potter. i myself had to read catcher in the rye and handmaids tale, and probably other books that are typically banned by religious zealots.
Amazing amounts of win here!

I’ll start preparing the C-4.
You are my hero!
Why do I suspect that this was a clever play on the part of the school administration to get the kids to read these books?
Doesn’t matter, Read books. . .
How many of those books would be read if they were on a reading list?
I dont see the bible on the list please include the word of God in ypur library
The bible wouldn’t have been banned
I just had the most epic facepalm ever. Are you really…. just… no….

The Perks of Being A Wallflower? I LOVE THAT BOOK

lol, i’ve read 4 of those. I hate private schools,
Mort FTW!
Sounds like a reverse psychology WIN to me!
Quite a few I enjoyed there. Going to check the others out.
Anyone not think to stop and say: “Your answer was in the question.”
“Is it okay to run an ILLEGAL…”
Should have stopped after illegal.
I know most people don’t get past the fourth Kolberg stage of moral development, but can you at least make an effort?
a catholic school won’t let kids read the qu’ran!? it’s breathtaking the amount of discrimination that still goes on.
Nekochan, you are my HERO!!! I hope you take over the world!!!!!!!!!
I’m going to use this in my English paper about banned books.
