I always have heard that the guy in his photo was killed just after this photo was taken. No idea if there is any truth to it. The story goes that the light house keeper went outside because of the helicopter taking the photo, unaware of the ensuing wave. Not sure if he was pulled into the ocean and drowned, or was just slammed around. Like I said, no idea of the truth behind it.
Ah well there you go. I’ll take this random internet video’s word that he didn’t die, because my assumption was that there was enough water to drown a few killer whales.
Does she actually have a painting of this? I had a black and white poster of it 25 years ago. It’s one of a series of incredible photographs of the wave and the light house. The title of the picture was, I think, the word for storm in French, Le or La Tempete, but I could be mistaken. It was a while ago. Anyway, I think it’s a win. The forces of nature against which the construct of man allows this man to stand, at least for the moment.
Not a painting, an actual photograph at least originally… the lighthouse “La Jument” in the “Raz de Sein” off the Brittany coast in France. Photo by Jean Guichar, won the 2nd Prize at Word Press Awards in 1990.
This is a print from Ikea…

Ah, this painting. My mother has it hanging in her living room.
Why is this painting a win?
I suppose it could be a WIN that the man made it back inside before the waves took him away.
my grandparents have this in their family room too

La Vielle Jument in France (Bretagne, Finistere, Ile de Quessant). The guy in the door is Théodore Malgorn, the photo was taken by Jean Guichard.
I dont think this should really be considered a win, iirc… this guy got swept out to sea and drowned.
Actually he made it back just in time. Google Théodore Malgorn, he was the lighthouse keeper.

Wow. That photo what take when Photoshop was a baby
I hope that guy went back inside really quickly.
No problem. Strategic door location makes that unneeded.
COME AT ME BRO
Looks like the entrance to Rapture. That’s kind of creepy.
Does that guy realize he is about to die?
Welcome to Rapture.
^^This.
The lighthouse guy survived for sure; he was interviewed on BBC2′s Coast programme and presented with a print by the photographer.
Yeah, I saw that interview around April??? :S Sometime in the last six months anyway. He is alive and well
Does anyone else see the creepy face just to the right (our left) in the waves right next to the guy?!? EEEK
I thought exactly the same thing!
According to the Nikon website Theodore Malgorn, the light house keeper survived.
Guy looks pretty nonchalant.
Yeah, it kinda looks like he has his hand in his pocket, just casually standing there.
This is the kind of thing that gives me nightmares
*scrolls quickly past*
it’s just a bunch of froof breaking on the rock in front, that dude had nothing to worry about
