My thoughts exactly. At least they didn’t imply it was a monkey.
Apparently the name “Donkey Kong” was originally a mistranslation. They were going for “Monkey Kong.” I had always kind of wondered but I’m glad they got it wrong. That would have driven me crazy but my brain accepts “donkey” as silliness not ignorance.

Shigeru Miyamoto was in fact going for a variant of “King Kong” when he made that name. He thought he’d go for an ape character who was the opposite of a “King”, which in his mind would be a stubborn, stupid character. So he picked up a Japanese-English dictionary (apparently not one of the better ones) and it listed “donkey” as a word for stupid, which he liked because of the connotations with stubbornness. Donkey Kong is supposed to be a foolhardy, stubborn character. Still doesn’t make sense? Might help if you thought of it as “Jackass Kong”.
