I can’t stand Sweet Child o’ Mine, and Smoke on the Water gets old in a hurry – especially if it’s not played well. Then again, anybody who cannot play SotW half-assedly well (like me) has no business buying an electric guitar
Pengwn you are a huge idiot Sweet child o’ mine is kick ass I mean it’s by guns and roses for crying out loud and smoke on the water is awsome you have to play smoke on the water to be able to play guitar otherwise you are not a true guitarist
Stairway’s OK if they launch straight into the solo. Not the Dsus chords that preface it and then the solo, I mean just the flippin’ solo like Jimmy played on his old Tele. Then do something else.
Haven’t seen it myself, but I heard from a friend of mine who plays the guitar pretty well that this even if there aren’t as absolute notes as this one, this is quite common in stores that sell instruments.
Once I visited a large music store, and they had an actually much longer list, including all AC/DC songs, Nothing Else Matters and some more. An employee told me this was neccessary because many customers who really suck at playing guitar were playing these songs…
So basically, from reading the comments here, when shopping for an electric guitar, you’re not allowed to play ANY guitar song that was reasonably popular at any time, ever. Got it. Just buy it and see how it sounds when you get home. Oh, and no returns, no exchanges.
Precisely. As nuts as it sounds, playing any song that is under copyright and owned by the RIAA (which, practically speaking, means all songs) in public automatically means you must pay the RIAA a performance fee. Stores don’t want to pay this fee and can get in to big trouble with the RIAA if caught “performing” without a license. (Similar is also true just for playing a radio or TV)
No stairway! Denied!
You, sir have beaten me.
i like that rule
the only song i can play is seven nations army
Exactly. Not so original when the Wayne’s World movie did it back in ’92. ’92!
Now I feel old.
ya i was going to say the same thing.
It was old before Wayne’s World.
That’s an unwritten law… at least until now.
Also, amp should go up to eleven.
Why not just make 10 louder?
But, this one goes up to eleven.
For $2000, I’ll build you one that goes up to 12.
You win an internet.
Total WIN

I could handle Stairway, though
I agree! If someone can’t instantly pick up a guitar and put Jimi to shame, they have no business touching one!
So how is anyone supposed to LEARN, then?
Pengwn you are a huge idiot Sweet child o’ mine is kick ass I mean it’s by guns and roses for crying out loud and smoke on the water is awsome you have to play smoke on the water to be able to play guitar otherwise you are not a true guitarist
So Guns n’ Roses means everyone instantly likes it?
Crazy Train is right out as well.

Iron Man. Please. Put that song on that list. Or any other song that was included in Guitar Hero II.
Screw Guitar Hero. Black Sabbath is always acceptable.
Haven’t seen it myself, but I heard from a friend of mine who plays the guitar pretty well that this even if there aren’t as absolute notes as this one, this is quite common in stores that sell instruments.
That’s why they put absolute notes.
Wait, did I read that wrong? As in even without notes they don’t allow it?
*our
*Are….
Can you play the bass line of feel good inc. ?
I think I speak for everyone when I say:
“Play Freebird!”
Beat me to it.
Party on Wayne!
Happy Birthday To You belongs on that list. When the Holiday season rolls around, add Jingle Bells also. I can handle almost anything else.
‘Sweet Home Alabama’ should also be on that list.
Srsly? No “House of the Rising Sun”?
Not being a musician might be the reason, but WHY aren’t you allowed to play these tunes???
Because every other tool with a guitar plays these ones. Hearing awful renditions of these songs over and over and over again gets annoying.
Because EVERYONE plays them and they get old. FAST.
The songs or the people trying to play them?
Wayne and Garth would be sooooo pissed off about this
people who think they can play those songs and think their pros at guitar piss me off. music store +1!
Once I visited a large music store, and they had an actually much longer list, including all AC/DC songs, Nothing Else Matters and some more. An employee told me this was neccessary because many customers who really suck at playing guitar were playing these songs…

ALL Sales Final….
CASH ONLY…..
Oh, yes… Come Again!!

Learn “Classico”
Don’t forget Smells Like Teen Spirit!
Oh yeah? Watch me blast out Master of Puppets!!! XD
Plz also exclude “one” by metallica and Paranoid…Cannot say how often i hear them at my local shop…
*include ? but yeah exclude works too, depends
And Egyszerű dal… oh wait it is just in Hungary…
But it’s still ok to play Through the Fire and Flames, right?
and 7 nation army
People can only play Through the Fire and Flames in slow mo.
This is a win, however it’s out in every music store I’ve ever been, so why now? Also, I think Nothing Else Matters is #1
well if dragonforce would “play” it than no
Good! Because ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ is truly, fracking awful! >.<
Except for, you know, it won Rolling Stones Magazines survey on best song ever not that long ago.
I think everyone is misinterpreting the sign. It’s not saying those songs suck. Everyone tries to play them, and almost everyone sucks.
Regardless, acting like an @$$ to your customers is a good way to lose business… something the musically inclined forget often in this line of work.
I agree with you. You’re the business, you have to put up with customers, including their slaughtering of great songs.
But then other customers could be discouraged from coming back?
wow telling off your potential customers before the even get inside the store…. how great for business….
Fine then…. I’m playing Grandma Got Ran Over by Reindeer, Closing Time and Who let the dogs out.
Twinkle twinkle little star
awesome.
My high school bandroom had a sign up similar to this.
Playing Halloween is mandatory.
I’d pick up a guitar, start improvising and then suddenly play smoke on the water. problem?
