First of all this was originally done by an Aussie comedy band called “Axis of Awesome”, google them, they are aptly named. Secondly he does credit the band at the start of the piece so I’d say it’s more of an hommage than a copy…
Thirdly… he’s good…
The use of this same chord progression is even more blatant in punk music. It’s one of the first ones I learned playing guitar and it’s insane how many punk songs simply change the tempo, strumming pattern, or start at a different point. D-A-B-G learn those power chords and you can play probably 10% of all the punk songs ever written right away.
No, it’s a genre of music. The whole “movement” thing was started by a fashion designer as a way to cash in on stupid London youth. The Ramones just wanted to play 50s-style bubblegum pop-rock music but just played it at double time.
There is a musical term for this. It is called cadence.
For example the key C major:
You can start with tonic, C, then play it’s subdominant, F, followed by it’s dominant, G (often with a 7) and back to tonic, C.
These major triads can accompany almost any song, in any key.
My school has a special music program, and they teach us this.
No, a cadence is simply the end of a phrase, for example, V-I is an authentic cadence, IV-I is a plagal or church cadence, V-VI is a deceptive cadence. The musical term for what he’s doing is a chord progression. Writing different melodies over the same chord progression is called contrafact.
Got to agree with bassbone the cadence is simply the ending. if you wanted to get technical you could say that because the progression loops back from the IV to the I that there is a plagal cadence effect built in.
It’s not so much the chord progression that makes the cadence, but a sense of conclusion. There are seven types of cadences. Each one has to do with how the chord progression ends. An authentic cadence (which occurs most here) seems to sound more final as opposed to a half cadence which kind of leads the listener thinking what’s next, but is the end of a phrase. A half cadence ends on the dominant while authentic ends on the tonic chord.
I’ve seen this done before, but the PVC instrument is really cool!
When he started playing, though, the first song to pop into my head was “Your Guardian Angel,” a little disappointed that didn’t pop up. Glad to see Mika, though!
Years ago, some friends of mine would do a performance that was sort of a mish-mash of “Don’t Stop Believin’”, “With or Without You”, and “I Think We’re Alone Now”. They’d even sing parts of two different songs at the same time. Most amusing.
Other than the PVC instrument, this has been done 147385632 times. Trust me, I counted.
Rob Paravonian’s Pachelbel Rant is probably the best
I LOVE that rant. It’s hilarious!
I love that guy, and his rant is SOOOOOO much older than this kid’s video.
I second that!
Prefer him over Axis of awesome too!
That guy is funny but because of the sheer amount of songs in the Axis of Awesome song, I prefer it.
Neato, but the other one with the Super Mario theme and Pirates of the Caribbean theme was better!
too bad he copied the video with the guitar player playing only four chords. NO SOUP FOR YOU!

Right, cus, punk is a movement and an ideal, not a high form of art. Jerk.

+1 Internets for playing MIKA!
Blue man group done it before…
with flip flops, win.
yeah, I thought blue man group too… they pre-date axis of awesome?
They use these instruments. The first guys made them all themselves.

I have a music degree, foo.
But not a spelling degree. Sorry, but it was just sitting there!
Um, what spelling error?
Because you have a degree in music “foo”.

I want to get a music degree, foo
oh, what ever.. thats what they call it in Norway, anyways….
Way to kill a young musician’s enthusiasm.
you forgot the relative minor… this is what makes the four chords work…
for the key of G, the oldie chord progression goes G, Em, C, D
for the key of C, it’s C, Am, F, G

And fail… I did not read the previous comments. My bad people. Did not mean to reiterate what was already said.
Since all pop music is written by the same pack of corporate shills, it’s no wonder it all sounds the same.
For those who appreciate talent, there’s Queen.
OMG! Freddie’s alive!
Hey, I love queen and all, but it’s not the best example for something not-corporate and mainstream in it’s time

You will hear that many of these songs do not use these chord progressions. The video should be “melodies that sound OK over these four chords”.
Glad I’m not the only who noticed that. You could probably play almost any melody over those chords and it would fit.
“I got these triceps from playing my PVC instrument, I swear!”
good tribute to the axis of awesome
love the sound of the PVC i got turned onto it from blueman.
keep up the good work..
atleast this video doesnt have some dumbass chick going WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO at every song he does e.e
So much win in these comments! Hah!

glad to see i wasnt the only one who wanted your guardian angel for some reason when i heard the pvc instrument
looks like a chicken.
There are only so many keys, and only so many notes within a key – of the billions of songs in existence, why is anyone surprised by this?
i fapped to this and actually came
Dude, TMI. NOT cool……
I think he did very well. I like it.
Aside from my earlier comment about most melodies fitting over those chords, his skills are top notch and the PVC instrument sounds really nice!
its not even chords just a bass line.
He could be a Blue Man yet.
He built that? That is awesome.
This guy used to go to my highschool. And he played Lumiere in our production of Beauty and the Beast. And he rocked it. And he’s also super nice!
will you marry me and have my sexy musical babies please? I mean good looks PLUS talent??? how are you not famous??
Accoustic 8 bit music. Me gusta.
“Wow! I had no idea you were that good at moving your hands up and down!”
Amazing! But, you can add one more song to those four chords: Billy Joel’s “We can’t stop the fire?” I think that is the name of the song.
All the small things? When I come around?
he forgot “so lonely” by the beatles and no woman no cry i think
aghhh poopypoop did i say the beatles i think i might punch myself in the face a few times now, i meant the police, total lapsus right there
DotA FTW
