It does seem like a country full of hack possibilities, going by local names alone. Things like: “Don’t . . . Knockagarry” or “Killaclug . . . go to jail.” Maybe “Skahanagh More . . . Drive Less”? And who knows what might happen to Dingle, Cork, and Lyre.

My favourite is a place in Co. Galway called “Fartamore”
No hacking required!
…..in a make-belief country called Ireland.
its real very real
He’s right, it’s realer than you.
Can anyone tell me why its IRL?
I get why its GB – Great Britain, but why IRL? Its spelt Ireland.
I may sound completely idiotic but I’ve lived here all my life, yep all 13 years of it and I cant figure out why?
Trying to indicate the country quickly by sight. I is already Italy, IR is Iran, so they went with IRL IReLand. Yes, it is in English. Could be EIR. Normally in the countries own language, such as D for Deutschland. Why it is A for Austria when it’s called Österreich in German, that I don’t know. Maybe they didn’t want to be country 0 (zero)?
Thankies to you both, I felt less dumb knowing that, but then realised I had like three spelling mistakes in my sentence
It’s actually taken from a french DHL freight map I have in my office. It was there all along just waiting to be hacked
damn english taking our language our religon and our women
Indeed, we’re good at that kind of thing. Map never lies.
But if it was EIR, then it would be mistaken for Eire which is only the republic Ireland.
Northern Ireland technically part of Britain anyway, but I think they already have NI.
No.
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain refers to just England, Scotland and Wales.
Eire refers to just the Republic of Ireland.
Ireland refers to both Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
IRL is the designation for the Republic. Northern cars carry a badge with GB. Never understood why it wasn’t EIR myself.

It’s not ISO 3166-1 alpha 3, because that’s always three letters. They’re using international licence plate codes:

I used to live in Ireland and I had a big map of the south tacked up on my wall. When I spoke on the phone or was bored, I would look for funny town names and circle them. The map’s tucked away now but the ones I can remember off the top of my head are Moanmore, Pass-if-you-can, and Pigeon.
“Oh my God, it’s Kilkenny!- Bastards!”
