Like everyone, we’re delighted that the Gulf Oil spill seems to be under some degree of control, but the stain on the reputation – and logo – may be tough to wash out.

just so you guys are aware… bp gas stations are independently owned and operated. So when you attack them for something their gas supplier did you are just hurting your community.
Yes, but we americans feel that we did something to help, blaming the producer and all of its branches. Even though we clearly did nothing to help the oil leak.
Speak for for yourself, mate. Here in FL we organized our own volunteer ‘navy’ to skim oil and set up barriers, we trained to treat oiled wildlife and helped fun and expansion to the local bird hospital. We even sent out oceanographers to perform tests on the water and monitor the effect on local wildlife.
All without any help from BP
Kinda fun how there is such a huge outrage about what is happening in the gulf.
There have been Oil spills like this in the Niger Delta for decades, with a similar amount of spillage in barrels as what is currently happening in the gulf. Chevron, Shell, BP and Exxon have been letting teir old pump stations rot away, virtually threatening the existence of over 20 million people.
Guess the difference between the Gulf and the Delta is, that it´s happening to someone who has a lobby…
americans only care about themselves. end of story.
Every human tribe suffers from the same condition.
Like most of the BS America gets knocked for, its universal and knows no borders.
simply enough, someone felt strongly about it and made a stand they felt necessary at a level they could.
bottom line any oil spill is bad and personally i feel little has/was done..
well done that person.
Oh, shut the fuck up would you? Look at a list of important inventions that were made in America. Printing press, telephones, affordable gas powered cars, air conditioning, first airplanes, television, frozen food, cardiac befibrillators, and computers to name a few.
Perhaps you had a couple bad experiences with Americans that made you so pretentious, but I guarantee you that America has contributed to the world just as much as any other country. Maybe less than some countries, maybe more so than other countries.
Defibrillators*
Well, fuck.
Jonas is a troll; please don’t feed the trolls.
Trolls typically say ridiculous things just to get a rise out of people. “Americans are isolationists” isn’t really a contentious statement.
I believe that if you use your scroll wheel and go a teeny bit further up the page you will see that the exact quote was actually “americans only care about themselves”. I can see how you might make that mistake, though; the two phrases being so similar and all.
just trying to make all this rabble sound a bit more intelligent. pick up a book.
I would advise you to do the same. If intelligent dialogue is what you’re after, the internet isn’t likely to be where you’ll find it.
No; the difference is that some things happen to people who care enough to work to solve it, and some things happen to people who think “eh. We’re getting paid.”
My heart does not bleed for those who do not help themselves.
Whoa, I didn’t know BP just let anyone use their logo and name for free?!
BP sure is generous.
it’s a franchise agreement. the people who run and work at this station have nothing to do with how BP is run or the oil spill. Whoever did this to their sign is an overly demonstrative idiot. Also the platform was owned and maintained by transocean (who are Swiss and have dodged the blame ray very well)…oh and Cameron International actually made and installed the ‘blowout preventer’ which…failed to prevent a blowout… but yeah, vandalise BP logo’s and everything will get better.
It just seems like its a weird thing to get upset about. The gas station has to pay money to BP to use that logo, so supporting them supports BP.
You don’t see your kind of comments with all the McDonalds or just other random graffiti on this site.
Its funny cause it looks like an oil spill, and BP is associated with an oilspill.
The people who own the station didn’t cause the spill, and they didn’t know when they made the franchise agreement that there would be a spill. These are regular people trying to make an honest living and they are being driven out of business for something they had nothing to do with. Besides, why do we want to hurt BP? If they go bankrupt they won’t be able to pay any cleanup costs or the multitude of lawsuits.
so how does that excuse them for making an agreement with BP in the first place? I’m sorry, but if I’m going to start up a franchise business of any kind, I would be doing a lot of research into the companies I was looking at to see how good of a company they are. Anyone who takes the time to do that with BP will see their faults. If you don’t do your research, then you’re at fault too, even if you’re just a franchise.
dear sir/madam as much as i think bp and everyone else involved should have stopped and be responsible for the aftermath cleanup ,this was a event that all the research in the world couldnt have predicted thats like saying “oh im investing 40 million in orange or att” and then something happens like a month long server shutdown or loss of a satellite and accusing the local shoppes of doing bad business or having part in the fiasco.
Not to be argumentative, robert, but unfortunately a little research *could* have predicted & prevented this mishap. If you google “bp oil spill preventable” you’ll find endless evidence that several superiors on the rig ignored warnings from the crew and disregarded safety measures in general. The fact that this kind of carelessness happens often (and sometimes without incident) shouldn’t excuse BP – it should make us all more concerned about enforcement of safety standards.
BP is well known for its absolute compleate lack of respect for safety mesures. Multiple massive safety crisis arose, throughout the years, they never fixed their policies.
If anything, it got worse after they briefly tried improving safety. See, safety costs alot. Investors were pissed, so they said, no more safety! Actually, LESS safety MOAR CASH PLEASE to catch back on what have been spent.
The spill was 100% possible to prevent. The magnetude of a spill would have been much less important if they gave a damn about safety. BP’s safety standarts are way, WAY behind what you see in other oil companies to the point it freaks me out BP was allowed to drill at all.
You do realize that is not how the gas franchise works…
The parent Co. keeps the receipts from gas sales (none to the franchise owner) and the franchise owner keeps the receipts from the convenience store and any other amenities…
So… F*ck BP and the Governments of the world that enable the irresponsibility we see today.
I would think that gas stations supplied by BP would lower their prices so they would get some business despite being hated for the controversy..
BP charges their franchises more than most other brands. The franchises have to sign an agreement so they can only buy BP gas. If they lowered their prices by any significant amount they would be selling for less than cost, which wouldn’t help matters, and happens to be illegal.
I just hope thats paint/mud and not what it looks like to me
I agree with Iax – there are plenty of franchises here getting flack for being affilliated with a “greater evil” whether the individual owner had anything to do with it or not. Shooting a paintball at a BP sign is a statement against the BP corporation. Other corporations may be equally at fault for the spill, but their logos are not so ubiquitous.
Besides, I have a feeling that once all of the gulf-related damage suits go through, it’s not going to be much fun to be a BP franchise owner anyway – consumer boycotts or no.
Actually, they are very responsible. They buy their oil from BP, thus 100% support it. End of the story.
The gas there seems oddly expensive… where was this taken?
That’s on Houston St in lower Manhattan.
just seems like pointless vandalism, rather than a somewhat smart and devious hack.
Google “gulf oil spill”. Then you’ll get it.
When you give money to a BP franchise, you give money to BP.
Sorry, but I’m not going to do that again willingly.
The franchise owners can ditch BP and sell someone else’s gas or they can deal with it. There’s no way in hell I’m going to just keep buying BP gas.
For all of you that want to punish the franchise owner anyway, just remember that your employer (if you have one) could have a major client or someone else whose success you depend on ensnarled in a big political mess and it could end your job. I’m sure you would post that it’s not fair then.
The righteously indignant rarely read past the headline, kudo’s to those above who posted about the other parties who were more closely responsible for the safe construction and operation of that platform, including the US government who did a poor job of inspection.
Does gasoline really cost 3$15 in the US ?
I thought we beat all the records in France, but it is twice the price there !
It depends where you are in the US. Smaller cities are cheaper, bigger cities are more expensive generally – but there’s usually no more than a 30 cent per gallon difference, if that. Gas in Europe tends to be way more because many European countries tax gasoline quite a bit, sometimes making up to 75% of the entire cost. It all depends on government policies of each country.
Yes but 3$15 is enormous. The tax in France is of 60% but the price is about 1€50, which I thought was already excessive. Poor you.
Just so we’re clear and compare apples with apples :
A gallon is 3,8 litres. (Metric system in France, right?)
USD 1.37 ~ €1
Nice to see the Puck Building in the background!
3.15 a gallon – ouch – i just paid 2.49, mind you, in a few weeks I can just skim it off my local beach for free.
Just to say that this boycott of BP is a bit hypocritical, i don’t see any one boycotting Exxonmobil for the oil spill in brooklyn and the oil spill in alaska or the boycott of union carbibe for the gas leak in Bhopal Indian which killed around 15,000 people
I’m glad electric cars are comming so we get a choice, at last.
(Where I live we make our electricity with hydropower.)
the title of this one is a win.
Scottish play reference! Win!
*blink blink* Hooray for controversy? I’ll refrain from giving an opinion on the many many comments here, but I think the hacked sign just kind of points out the obvious.
Totally just liked this for the Shakespeare reference.
