“I’ve Got Pac Man Fever

I’m going out of my mind.” In case you’re too young to remember, Pac Man was so incalculably huge in the early 80′s that a crappy song about it was in the Billboard Top 10. Scramble and Defender were my video games, but I can’t recall any songs about them. There is no justice.

Actually, on the same album as Pac Man Fever, there is a song for Defender. As well as Frogger, Donkey Kong and some others.

There was a Defender one, called “The Defender”. It was on the same album as Pac Man Fever. Look up the album on Amazon and you can listen to a sample.

You beat me. I was going to say the same thing. I got the tape as a kid. I still it somewhere.

I had the Pac-Man Fever album on LP. The sleeve included the patterns you needed to learn to survive the first dozen or so levels.

Unfortunately, that LP had scratches that caused it to skip repeatably in the same spots. But only on turntables I used. Whenever I took it back to the record store for replacement, their turntables always played it back perfectly. Suspiciously, they played it on the store speakers from somewhere in the back where I was not allowed to verify they were playing my record and not some tape.

Eventually I got fed up and told them that if their turntables can play it back so perfectly, they could transfer it to cassette tape for me. I had to pay for the blank tape of course. They did, using a floor model turntable and cassette deck, and lo and behold the tape included every skip I heard from home! Vindicated, I demanded they get me a replacement record.

They held the record in the store while waiting for a new pressing to arrive. But it had since gone out of print. Eventually the store went out of business. And I never got my LP back. Even the store was demolished and is now an empty sandlot from which they sell fireworks every year.

It did later get released on CD, but I’m told the tracks are rerecorded and not the same as those originally pressed on vinyl.

It’s a dirty, filthy job, but it’s gotta be done,
There’s a battle going on; it’s gotta be won
I’m a million miles from home in a foreign place
The battle ground this time you see is outer space

    I’m the defender
    A mutant ender
    I’m the defender
    A mind-bender

I’ll defend this day to the end
I’m the captain of this ship it’s men

  5. Duke says:

Damn you all for reminding me of these songs! I had successfully forgotten that they existed.

I also wore out that Buckner & Garcia tape. Luckily, I bought and downloaded it from iTunes, so I can wear it out all over again!

And then there was also Elvis Presley’s hit, “Return Defender”…

  12. I came across that Buckner and Garcia vinyl at a garage sale. Did I pay $5 for it? Absolutely. First thing I did was hook up my turntable and record it to the computer. Now I can listen to it while I play Atari 2600 games on my emulator. :)
