  1. Captain Obvious says:

    Opiate, and masses

    • Nick says:

The original quote is “Die Religion … ist das Opium des Volkes.” Translate it how you like, it means the same thing.

      • The Amazing Rando says:

Die Religion?! Why does he want religion to die?!?

(Oh wait, that’s German. Never mind.)

      • Spiderbait says:

Not if you look at the entire quote. It pretty much states that religion is there to numb people to how horrible their life is. Something that socialism would solve.

        • Sam says:

That COMMUNISM would solve. I hate to be nazi-ish (that expression is awesome in this context), but socialism is a separate economic theory that happens to form the basis for the communist manifesto. It can be applied in many forms, even a socially conservative society.

        • JAWS says:

As Sam noted, you mean communism. Not socialism. If you did really mean socialism, then you are mistaken regardless still.

    • regset says:

      THIS.
People quoting incorrectly make me rage.

  2. Berserkas says:

Opium is opium. Who could have thought?

  3. BA says:

everthing is opium if youre a bird

  4. BAReFOOt says:

Karl Marx’s response: Methaphors! Do you know them, bítch?
What he meant, was the fact, that religion is a mental disease (mild schizophrenia) that was (and is, look at Iran and the USA) used by criminal organizations (“churches”) to control people en-masse like cattle. (To do that, they either need to be dumb, or experience some horrible reality, like wars and depressions. Go figure…)

    • SmarterThanYou says:

      WRONG
Marx never said “religion=opiate of the masses”
He meant that class division leaves poorer people (low class/proletariat) with such terrible lives their only hope was to believe in god/afterlife, and practice religion, thereby “numbing” yourself to the suffering of being so poor.

None of you ever read the Communist Manifesto, admit it.

      • Catherine says:

Actually yes, I have read that. I also have read Marx’s introduction to A Contribution to the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right. That’s where the quote is from. If you actually read more of Marx then just the Manifesto, you would know that.

      • schlabberheinz says:

        Well…I’ve read it… and I guess you didn’t..
If you did you would know that Marx didn’t write
about that topic in the Manifesto of the Communist Party.

The sentence is a quotation from the “Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right”
(Einleitung zur Kritik der Hegelschen Rechtsphilosophie)

    • rab3 says:

Your the one who sounds crazy. Atheism one of the most poorly thought world views ever. Religion has nothing on your when it comes to crazy. More than a 100 million people have died under Atheist regimes. Religion has nothing on Atheist there either.

      • Tony says:

        @rab3

How many people have died in the name of god? Assuming one way or the other is the “most poorly thought world views ever”.

      • Tom Sawyer says:

… and how many BILLIONS have died under ‘Christian’ regimes? Nazi Germany was Catholic & Lutheran. The British Empire was Anglican, and they would stack dead colonials like firewood. The US Civil War was fought by two democratically-elected ‘Christian’ nations. How many wars did Britain and France fight? Both were Christian at the time. South Africa under Apartheid was Christian. The Spanish Conquistadors murdered how many millions on the North American continent, not counting the native that died from diseases carried by those ‘Christians’.

How many atheist regimes have there been? Stalinist USSR was officially atheist, but Stalin was worshipped as a god. Similarly Maoist China was officially atheist, but Mao was worshipped as a god. As best I can tell, there has NEVER been an actual ‘atheist regime’ in all of human history, much less one that murdered 100 million people.

Tally: billions murdered by Christians, zero by atheists. Bring in the other two Ibrahimic religions (Judaism & Islam), and you have the murderers have 99.9+% of all those who have died from human-made causes the past 3000 years. Jehovah/Yahweh/Allah is truly a god of war, famine, pestilence, and death.

        • Roflcoptor Pilot says:

          rofl.

There are so many factual errors here, I’ll just pick out what I feel are the worst ones to correct.

1.) Nazi Germany wasn’t “Catholic & Lutheran.” It definitely wasn’t Catholic–he hated Catholics since they acknowledge the authority of the Pope (i.e. the authority of someone other than Hitler). It wasn’t even entirely Lutheran… Hitler tried to coerce the Protestant churches into becoming a “Reichschurch” under the control of a “Reichsbishop” (not sure about the spelling of either) who would basically be one of Hitler’s goons… not a legitimate religious leader. And even that plot failed (the Lutheran clergy, understandably, didn’t like the idea of having their religion taken over by the state).

2.) “zero by atheists.” The regimes of Stalin and Mao were atheistic. They were communist regimes, and were therefore anti-religious. This claim of yours is historical revisionism, plain and simple.

          In conclusion: try harder, troll.

          • Jcc says:

you contradicted yourself. ANTI-religion and athiesm are two very different things. how can you be anti-anything if you simply don’t believe in it?

      • Richard Elliott Hilford says:

You are a complete fucking moron.

    • The Amazing Rando says:

Religion is a mental disease? That’s a FACT?!

    • Misopogon363 says:

I believe his intended meaning would be better understood today as something like “Religion is the advil of the masses” A type of fetishism we employ to mitigate the harsh reality of our lives.

  5. JD says:

I thought it was *opiate*. If you’re going to make a reference, at least get the reference right.

  6. Manfred says:

Just like in communism, just like in communism.

    What happened in communist countries?
Right, people got killed, mass-murdered and tortured.

My friend, it’s not Religion that’s evil, it’s humanity!

    • CLP says:

People fight over cake too. There’s never quite enough cake.

      • Satan_mamma says:

        cake or death?

        • Nick says:

          I’ll have the chicken

          • busta2020 says:

We only had three bits, and we weren’t expecting such a rush.

            • Essayons says:

Exactly. Which is why Atheists will never get most peoples respect. They claim religion is an evil force that people do evil things with. Wrong. Religion is flawed, only because humanity is flawed. People have killed over MANY MANY things. There’s nothing wrong with religion. Humanity just sucks.

              • SlamminTheTurtle says:

BAM! Busted the nail wide open

              • Roflcoptor Pilot says:

                ^THIS. Thank you Essayons.

                • Essayons says:

No problem. Atheists also like to say if religion never existed, all those people who died in the name of it would have never been killed. Bullshit. It’s mankind, if religion didn’t exist, they would have just found something else to kill each other over.

              • snizz says:

good point. people will find any excuse to kill people, so atheists shouldn’t be surprised when religious people who claim to have the right view on things are bloodthirsty warmongers. it’s just in our nature. but you’re wrong about religion having nothing wrong with it. there’s a lot wrong with it merely because we keep f-ing everything up. if god exists, and he were a computer programmer, he would have been fired from any job he applied for on earth.

                • Computer Programmer says:

If he is real/was real, whatever he would be the greaters programmer on earth. Because as I know it the Christian Religion states he created humans, and therefore Intelligence, thats some slick algorithms man

      • The Amazing Rando says:

        The cake is a lie.

    • adam says:

Um, do you know much about European history? The whole thing is shot through with people killing each other over religion. Pagans fighting Christians, Protestants fighting Catholics, different bands of Catholics fighting each other, whole brigades of Christians marching south to kill Muslims, it’s all in there.

Unless you meant that both religionists and atheists can be equally vile, both being human, but I don’t think that’s your meaning.

  7. CLP says:

I think television in the opiate of the masses. Religion is just for passing the time when there’s nothing on TV.

  8. Saviolo says:

Opium would be the Opiate of the masses if it were… y’know… legal. And the people were using it en masse. By and large, I think that opiates (Heroin, Morphine, Opium) are used by a pretty small minority. Not to say that it’s not a problem, but religion and TV addictions are far more dangerous. Glenn Beck, for instance.

  9. Tony says:

Everyone should just be agnostic and stop acting like they know everything.

    • The Amazing Rando says:

If I submit this comment to Friends of Irony, do you think it will make it to the front page?

      • Tony says:

What’s ironic about it? There isn’t any proof one way or the other. The only logical position would be “I don’t know” which is agnostic.

        • chris says:

          lololol the irony continues

        • Ashley says:

teehee! Rando, you got ‘im. Post it.

Tony dear, must we spell it out for you? You were complaining about people acting like they know everything, while at the same time you were… acting like you know everything.

          • Jcc says:

actually.. to be agnostic is the admittance of NOT knowing one way or another. so yeah uh.. that’s not very ironic at all. while the point wasn’t so cleverly argued. the facts.. or lack there of remain.

  10. Rai says:

Isn’t it funny when people complain that something is incorrectly quoted, and then gives their “correct” version that has the exact same meaning, when the original quote wasn’t even written in their language?
The original: “das Opium des Volkes”; litterally “the opium of the people”. You guys fail.

  11. Anna Rexia says:

I thought the premise of Hacked IRL was that someone made a change (hack) to something to make it better. In this case, the graffiti appears to have been done all at the same time, by the same person. Or did I miss something, such as a deep meaning for the wicker chair being there?

    • ryanthejuggler says:

Someone hacked Marx’s original idea. The original statement was made by Marx, and the modification, as you see here, was done 150 years later, probably by a different person. Unless Marx came back to crack a joke at himself. Yeah I didn’t think so either.

    • Kiro says:

Isn’t it a reference to the old joke about the nudist lecturers?

  12. Philip says:

Karl Marx’ response: “Du bist ein Idiot! In meinem Zeit Opium war für die Reichen. Die Massen konnten Opium nicht sich leisten.”

Or, “You’re an idiot! In my time opium couldn’t be afforded by poor people. Opium was for the rich.”

You, the writer of this graffiti, fail at history. Opium was not the opiate for the masses, they couldn’t afford it. Religion was cheaper, and was therefore the opiate for the masses.

  13. DSquall says:

Opiate doesnt equal opium. Although opium can be classified as an opiate.

  14. sewan says:

Reilgion is not the opium of the people. It is the opiate of the people

  15. dissimilitude says:

From what I remember of my days working in a retail pharmacy, I believe the various combinations of hydrocodone and acetaminophen are the opiates of the masses, although they prefer oxycodone if they can get it.

  16. mumford says:

I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.
    - Stephen Roberts

    • Essayons says:

Yea, except 4 Billion people on Earth believe in the exact same God. Think that gives it a little more merit.

Same can go for science. On group of scientists can believe in one law, while a whole other group doesn’t. That doesn’t make it any less true.

      • snizz says:

yeah, and just because millions of people saw Avatar and loved it doesn’t mean it isn’t a steaming pile of garbage. and what law are you talking about that scientists don’t all agree on?

      • Borg says:

Just because X number of people believe ANYTHING doesn’t mean it has any merit. In all reality if we can’t sense it in any way with our five senses it doesn’t exist (as far as we know). For example, from right here in my room right now I cannot prove in any way shape or form to myself that trees exist. I take it on faith that I can walk outside and see a tree. Just like anything else in our world we put faith in. Be it science, God(s), Nature, ANYTHING! We can’t prove it so we make the conscience decision to put faith in it and believe it’s there without proof. So in these terms all forms of religion or lack there of are completely EQUAL! And the proof in there equality is there dismissability. Anybody else can dismiss your ideas and choose not to believe in them, and you can choose not to believe in there ideas. No one can prove anything so all this debate about masses and whether religion is legitimate is pointless. No one idea or belief can in any way surpass another because they are all stuck at the starting line going no where. So please everyone reading this believe something and legitimize it in your own eyes, but remember that most likely the majority of the world will not agree with you and there’s no way to change that.

  17. Chris says:

Religion causes pain, opium kills it.

  18. Sam says:

Why does this have to become a debate? It’s just a funny bit of graffiti. Take your politics to somewhere more serious, this is like bringing up the meaning of life at a comedy club.

  19. soso104 says:

so many oh so intelligent people here ._.
i say: marx just got owned by a random troll irl.
    feel the burn, marx!

  20. Tygr says:

Karl Marx: “The workers control the means of production! The struggle of the urban proletariat!!”

Host: “No, it was Wolverhampton Wanderers who beat Leicester 3-1.”

    Marx: “Ah, shit.”

  21. gesster says:

    you guys are all idiots.

communism and socialism are the same thing, just varying degrees of it.

socialism is a step towards communism – communism is the end goal.

    retards

  22. Essayons says:

Zach, Stalin conducted mass purges of major religious figures simply because they were active in religion….
