Who said anything about commuting? Not every trip is to or from work. There are many opportunities to use a bike as transportation rather than just exercise. And in some places, it would be faster to ride a bike than to sit in traffic in a car.
Well yes.
But the vast majority of your journeys throughout your working life are going to be to & from your place of work, and back to home. Unless you’re lucky enough to live within walking distance.
And of course then, there’s always public transport.
For city centre jaunts, or short trips where there may only be a few minutes difference, or if you’re off on a pleasure cruise (or you’re in a spot where you have to prioritise money over time), it’s a perfectly fine way of getting about. Particularly if it’s good weather and the grades are gentle.
For everything else, it’s a rather inefficient way of spending the limited time we’re granted in our earthly existence. At my peak of cycling fitness I could just about keep up with moseying traffic (high 20s mph) on the flat. In all other situations… they’re going to get there before me, and I’m spending time getting flustered and making my clothes wet and stinky that I could have spent at my destination doing other stuff. Like chatting to you guys on the interwebs. Or working late to finish a project, something that has caused me for the last four nights to be going home at stupid o’clock and monstering my 17+ mile journey in less than 17 minutes. Would actually have fallen asleep enroute if it had taken more than double that (which it probably would had I stayed legal).
It’s true that bikes should be careful of where they are riding, but there’s some places where it isn’t exactly the safest thanks to the very traffic and the poor layout of the road (my road for instance has no bike lane or even a sidewalk). Can you blame them, though, for saving gas money AND getting a good workout with ‘em?
As a cyclist, i hate ‘the majority’ of cars on the road. They dont abide by the rules of the road when it comes to sharing the road with cyclists and they dont pay enough attention as to avoid accidents. The only ones that do, are the ones that either ride bikes themselves, or know someone that does.
The problem is not the cyclist. It is the drivers that dont pay attention to them.
Do you also hate people that walk to work?
I think a comment like “I hate bikes on the road” is pretty asinine. Share the road, it doesnt belong to you – I pay my taxes too. Where else would you prefer that we ride our bikes at?
Dont complain about the bicyclist. Complain to your city planners – they are the ones that didnt think about us when they planned the roads.
Sorry to be an ass.. But i took offence to that comment.
Recently I have taken comments like this to this extreme, and counted how many times vehicles go through stop signs as I arrive on my bike. for over 100 Stop signs, there have been 5 cars that have come to a full stop. For each time a car just rolled through, so did I. Next time you see a stop sign, watch the tires on the vehicles. I bet they don’t stop rolling.
This one seems to me like the bike and new slogan are PART of the ad. Maybe it’s just me, but I think this ad isn’t for Toyota, rather it’s a message to get people to ride bikes more often.
I don’t know, maybe I’m extrat insane today…
I disagree; it’s really too detailed to have been graffiti’d, but the blocks around the text and all the weird edges look photoshopped. And if it were an ad to get people riding bikes… being run over wouldn’t send a very encouraging message…. (imho).
This WOULD make a great ad for hit-and-run drivng, though!
Well I’ve seen some Toyota TV ads about being “greener”, and people in the ads were saying that they would bike or walk when possible, although they own a Toyota, so that doesn’t look hacked to me!
Maybe it’s because I DO use cycling as my primary mode of transportation, but I don’t see a car hitting a cyclist here, I see a cyclist who just rode over a car.
I live in a city without bike lanes, and many streets without sidewalks. Motorists and cyclists have to learn to respect each other. By law, cyclists can take up the whole lane if they want to/need to. They don’t have to be forced over onto the very edge of the road, but most do so anyway, for their own safety.
That is totally hacked. I’ve seen hacked bikes on billboards for years.
That said, I ride my bike when I can, and drive when I have to. I am glad that car billboards are being hacked in favor of biking. I often wish I could just go right over annoying drivers.
I’m pretty sure this was in fact hacked in real life. My evidence: look at the areas underneath where the new parts have been pasted on, and you can see paste drippage. That’s not the work of Photoshop. Also, Photoshopping wouldn’t create a weird rectangle around “Go by bike.” It’d just be there.
The thing I find most notable about this is the idea of a Toyota saloon providing some kind of exhiliration. They’re very “grey” vehicles… and seem to be bought by people who didn’t so much choose them for what they are, as just needed “a car”, stuck a pin in the back of a motor magazine, and couldn’t find any pressing reason to go with a … (*reads nearest words to the pin*) “Toyota… Avensis… one point eight… Dee-four-dee… Gee-El? Is that good?”
The small cars, pretty good, the Prius has some merit in congested cities if a cycle/moto/bus doesn’t suit your needs, but the larger ones are just featureless beigeboxes against the most luxurious of which (and I don’t doubt it has lots of high tech toys) something like a base-spec Ford Mondeo looks exciting.
Actually had my first ever sober ride in one of those today – having to take a cab on work business. I can see actually why they’re chosen by cabbies… it was -reasonably- comfortable, and very quiet.
The smug cycling shit was never funny. I agree with Hypnotoad entirely; the underlying idea is grand but in practice most cyclists are total jerks who think everyone should behave their way and don’t obey the laws of the road. As was said before, cycling just isn’t an option for most people, honestly. It certainly can be fun, but in most cases it’s no alternative to a car, and to believe otherwise is just wishful thinking gone bad.
arrive exhausted… go by bike
Keep using that bike and sooner or later you won’t be so out of shape.

I think spandex wearing bicycleists are douchebags, share the road hippies.
I dont think ive ever seen anyone write an essay in response to a picture…
The way the car appears to have hit the bike and is now tossing it through the air, perhaps the slogan should be “Arrive Eviscerated.”
Man, I hate bikes on the road.

Are you serious? Most cyclists ignore stop signs and lights…. if you get hit, it’s most likely your damn fault.
Critical mass rides are the perfect example of the high-horse above the law a$$holes that cyclists are….

The car driver rage is strong in this one…. awww did somebody get overtaken in traffic this morning???
Poor lil’ guy…. I promise not to ping my bell as I pass tomorrow…

* pressing reason to NOT go with
Actually had my first ever sober ride in one of those today – having to take a cab on work business. I can see actually why they’re chosen by cabbies… it was -reasonably- comfortable, and very quiet.
But still duller than year-old ditchwater.
Did they use the largest label maker ever to make that “Get a Life” sign?
Get a bike, be a nuisance to people who actually have somewhere to go.

I’m pretty sure – based on recent-ish news stories – that a new Toyota is exhillarating enough, thanks.
Check out my Toyota bike!
(10 seconds later) I CANT STOP PEDALING !!!!1!
actually i live four miles from my school and it’s faster to cycle
Bikes are so much better than stupid cars I love this
go by car arive fat
Bike = Motorcycle > Bicycle
I’m shocked. Nobody’s made comments saying that this is shopped!
Or, maybe it was so obvious, nobody had to?
I like it. I love my bike.
