Indeed.

Morrissey was jailed for tagging? Heaven knows he’s miserable now.

Indeed.

Well it WAS fun until that..
After he figured out how to tag his cell they deemed him insane and put him in the padded room..
Once that white room became another color he had left them wondering how the f**k he did it..

HIRL needs more comment and picture traffic. Not enough win in my day!

  3. bobster says:

    brilliant moressey comment too:D

  4. mags says:

Why is Morrissey in jail for graffiti?

  5. BERRITO EETER says:

Well maybe there’d be more traffic if y’all were a little more hospitable to new people. I posted here one time in a friendly and jocular vein, and got attacked by a ridiculous troll. No one seemed too concerned about it. (see ‘as long as the chicken’s natural’) So I won’t be lingering.

    Right on. :D

  7. dardub says:

Seems like this sign is just asking to be tagged… I think it’s a trap!

  8. Caprica Jones says:

The fact that the billboard has been modded in a naiive-homage-to-Banksy style is all killer no filler to start with, but when I spotted the Morrissey comment atop I nearly burst m’ stitches laughing. Huzzah to all involved in this monumental art win.

  9. gloworm says:

Missed opportunity. Some red and white paint could make this into “Graffiti, it’s Prime!”

    • steven weltz says:

But wait, that’s a worse joke! Oh, I get it; you’re being sarcastic.

      • gloworm says:

No, I’m serious. Modifying letters is more creative than just adding a word. The message is still the same too.

        Prime
        adj.
        1. First in excellence, quality, or value.

        Therefore, graffiti is awesome.

Modifying letters certainly takes more effort, but let’s not confuse effort with creativity. For instance, I could expend a great deal of effort white-washing all of the text on that billboard, then replacing the text with “graffitti is quite possibly the best thing in the world.” This rewrite would require a great deal more effort than the featured picture, or even your suggestion. However, if I were to do this, I would not be witty or creative; rather, I would have spent a great deal of effort on a joke that is terrible.

Additionally, I could white-wash the entire billboard and then repaint it in exactly the same way; recreating every detail I had just painted away. This would require the most effort, yet not be at all creative, and not at all humorous.

In conclusion, you’re suggestion is terrible. Some may even go so far as to say that awfulness of your suggestion rivals that of your own face.

I appreciate that if you’re not a hip hopper and not into graff then it is simply a matter of how it was done and how it looks. However this piece inadvertently really does embody the original spirit of the graffiti movement, of modding one’s environment to make artistic and/or aesthetic comment and /or improvement. It’s obviously not done by a graff artist (and it’s not really a “tag” because tagging is putting up one’s name, this is probably closer to a “throw up” where the word is quickly thrown onto the wall, but the use of the word “tag” is necessary to put across the Morrissey joke), but it made us all laugh and will be greatly appreciated but old school hip hop nerd-niscenti. It also reacts with the environment and society in the same way that Seen did in the 80′s and Banksy does today.

I am wondering if the designer was a Smiths fan or just a bit depressed.
